	Scent “composition” is a good word. Like a musical chord resonating in the air until it fades away, scent evolves over time until it too fades. And like a chord, scents are composed of three harmonic “notes.” The “top note” is the first impression of the scent and is the most aggressive, the “middle note” is the body of the scent, and the “base note” lingers after the other notes dissipate, giving the fragrance a depth and solidity.
Bringing together disparate, easily emitted, vanishing, transparent elements of scent is comparable to organizing and preserving a priceless memory. The technique of utilizing RISO embodies the fact that olfactory memory is formed in the context of superimposed odor elements. The dynamic pattern better characterizes the flow of scent molecules. The process of feeling and articulating the emotions associated with one's olfactory memories can be very therapeutic and enriching.

	Intimate DialoguesI extracted scent elements from my interviewees and created dynamically-patterned flip books with associated images and embedded scents. Once the booklets were printed and bound, I gave them back to my interviewees to engage with and received their responses to the experience. We discussed memory, smell, and cross-sensory fusion.
